Jan Kvapil began to pursue music professionally after graduating from the Faculty of Science at Charles University. He studied the flute at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Peter Holtslag, and, he completed his studies at the Conservatory in Linz with Carin van Heerden by obtaining a pedagogical diploma with licenses of the Royal School of Music (London, 2001).
He has performed with many renowned Czech and international ensembles specialized in early music (Academia Daniel, Capella Rudolphina, Michael Consort etd.) on the concert stages at home and abroad (eg. Austria, Italy, Germany, England, USA), regularly records for radio, television and music publishers. As a soloist, he has worked with chamber orchestras of modern instruments (Talich Chamber Orchestra, Moravian Philharmonic in Olomouc etc.), and participated in the premieres of compositions by contemporary Czech composers (R.Z .Novák, Agon assembly). Currently he performs frequently in duo with the lutenist Jan Čižmár. He also focuses on educational activity; he founded the First weekend school of flute in Prague, where he aims on teaching music school teachers. Under his leadership there are regular seminars taking place in many parts of the Czech Republic, consisting of teacher training.
For many years he was an artistic director of the Summer School of Early Music in Prachatice, where both Czech and world famous players and teachers taught. Along with Eva Kvapilová he is the author of Flautschool, the progressive series of textbooks for the flute. He publishes also in the music magazines and translates special literature. He teaches playing the flute as the main subject at Janacek Conservatory and Grammar School in Ostrava; in the years 2006-2012 worked at the Department of Music Education, Palacky University in Olomouc and since year 2014 he has taught at the Academy of Early Music at Philosophy Faculty, Masaryk University in Brno.
