David Koller
shamanic drum
David Koller is one
of the most experienced czech rock musicians of his generation. He started his
career as a member of the choir Bambini di Praga. After his brother had
commenced the compulsory army service and left his drum set abandoned, David
first started playing this instrument. What drumming is really about he
properly understood after listening to the Buddy Rich in Lucerna recording.
His first big music
experience was with the famous band Jásná páka (1980-1982). There he first sang
Majolenka, a song which became a legendary hit in its time. During the period of
time when Jasná Páka was not allowed to perform, banned by the communist state,
David performed with Luboš Pospíšil and later he settled down in the band Žentour
for a few years. In 1987 he cofounded Lucie, a band, which he was faithful to
until it´s ending in 2005. Beside playing the drums he also played the guitar
and sang in Lucie. His typical nasal voice became a strong distinguishing sound
of czech rock music in the ninetees.
While in Lucie,
David was a popular band-mate, and he did not skip any chance to perform with
other musicians. The most famous of these collaborations were with Michael
Kocáb and Michal Pavlíček in Pražský Výběr, and with Ivan Král, Karel Šůcha and
Ivan Hlas in Alias (a band undervalued to this day).
David Koller´s first
solo album was released in 1993 and it consists of songs, many of which became
rock standards by today. His next solo album „Nic není na stálo“ was released after
13 years in 2006.
During an
intermission of his home band production, David started another occasional project
– the Kollerband. Their Studio Album And
Live Album is one ofe the first czech recordings being produced on
international level-in cooperation with David Bianco (US), who cooperated
with e.g. Ozzy Osborne (Ozzmozis), Mick Jagger (Wondering Spirit), Tom Petty
(Wildflowers). In 2005 the Kollerband realeased the first czech Dualdisc ever. The
biggest Koller´s interest is music, particularly his recording studio in Jinočany,
where he experiments with analogue recordings, as well as with digital. But David
doesn´t resign to take part in public affairs. Together with Alice Nellis and
David Černý he participated in establishing of the music and cultural centre
Meet Factory in Praha Smíchov.
