clavisimbalum (Norway)
Keyboard player, musical director and researcher specialized in late-medieval polyphony, David Catalunya studied in the conservatories of Toulouse and Lyon (France), at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC, Barcelona) and at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy). Leading his group Canto Coronato and being member of other relevant groups in the field of late-medieval music he carries out an international career mainly focused in repertories of the 14th and 15th centuries. He is a collaborator of the ensemble Mala Punica, directed by Pedro Memelsdorff, with whom he recorded the sacred repertoire of the Codex Faenza (CD "Faventina", awarded Diapason d'or de l'Anee in 2007). He is also a founding member of the ensemble Tasto Solo, directed by Guillermo Pérez, with whom he won the First Prize of the Antwerp Festival of 2006 with a duo performance. His exploration of the specific performance techniques of medieval keyboard instruments has placed him as an artist of reference in the field of pre-Renaissance repertoires. During the last ten years, he has brought the sound of his clavisimbalum to the most prestigious festivals and concert halls through all Europe. His most recent record holdings include the CD "ob allen Meyster Meystern" with the group Tasto Solo, awarded with a Diapason d'or, among more than 10 international distinctions. Parallel to his artistic activity, David Catalunya holds a research position at the University of Würzburg (Germany). He is also Associated Director of DIAMM (Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music, of the Oxford Faculty of Music) and a researcher at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. His publications embrace topics such as 12th century polyphony and monophony, 14th century Ars Nova and Ars Subtilior, codicology, palaeography and organology.
