Farinelli: Il Castrato (Gérard Corbiau, 1994, d. 111 min.)
Carlo Broschi (1705–1782), better known under his artistic name Farinelli, was one of the most famous opera singers-castratos of the Baroque era. For his singing as well as for his distinctive personality, Farinelli became an admired artist at the time, but also the subject of satire and slander. His voice, which combined a tenor's strength with a soprano's brightness, became a symbol of the captivating impact of music on human emotions. For some, however, the erotic sensuality of Farinelli's singing, combined with his androgynous gender identity, was also the embodiment of the moral indignities of opera as a genre. Thus the myth about Farinelli, who was a seductive virtuoso on the stage and a wild libertine in private, came into being. The intermingling of facts and myth is also characteristic of Gérard Corbiau's 1994 film, depicting - with an abundance of creative license - not only Farinelli's relationship with his brother, composer Riccardo Broschi, but also his entanglement with George Friedrich Händel’s and Nicola Porpora's opera companies in London. This film portrait therefore offers ample room for a debate about the boundaries between fact and fiction.
