MOVIE - Mahler
Programme:
Mahler (Ken Rusell, 1974, d.115 min)
Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) is an enigmatic figure of European musical modernism. In his music, flowery romantic gestures blend in with notes of pungent irony, the boundary between authentic expression and simple stylization is virtually indefinable, and a number of autobiographical musical references result in the blending of Mahler's life and work. These principles are reflected in this unconventional film portrayal by the British director Ken Russell from 1974. Instead of a linear narrative, the film offers a free sequence of fragments from various stages of the composer's life and dream sequences depicting Mahler's inner world – all with a great deal of exaggeration, humour and stylization. Russell toys with the conventions of different film genres in a manner similar to that of Mahler’s in music. For example, the imaginative scene of Mahler's conversion to Catholicism, which combines ignoble eroticism with Nazi symbolism, is crafted in the style of silent films, accompanied by the sound of Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyries. Mahler's own music plays a very important role in the film. The programme and onomatopoetic features of Mahler’s compositions, inspired by nature, love, and death, here take on a visual form. Russell's Mahler is therefore a unique attempt to transfer Mahler's creative poetics to the screen.
